Janine Lespérance


Janine Lespérance is a human rights lawyer with a diverse range of experience. Her current position is an oversight role in relation to the Canadian correctional system. Previously a Legal Advisor for Lawyers Without Borders Canada, her work focused on creating change through international transitional justice initiatives and strategic litigation. She is also the former Executive Director of the Canadian Section of the International Commission of Jurists, and has taught human rights law as a part-time Professor for the uOttawa Faculty of Law.

As project coordinator for the HRREC human rights clinic, she managed the development of the International Human Rights and Canada Database and directed a research project for the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Prior to that, she articled in private practice at Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP, with a substantial focus on public interest cases, and gained civil society experience through work for the Canadian Centre for International Justice, Amnesty International, and the Rabinal Community Legal Clinic in Guatemala. She holds a Juris Doctor degree with a specialization in international law from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, a Masters in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs of Carleton University, and a Bachelor Degree in Political Science from St. Francis Xavier University.
