HRREC Director contributed to the first International Conference on Mediation

On 2-4 June, HRREC Director Prof John Packer contributed to the first ever International Conference on Mediation held in South Africa, organised by the Centre for Mediation in Africa of the University of Pretoria in conjunction with Swisspeace and GSUM (Brazil).  The conference brought together scholars and practitioners from around the world, including mediation specialists from the United Nations, the Organization for Security and co-operation in Europe, the European Union a number of Governments and specialised NGOs.  Prof Packer contributed a talk on "The Nature and Role of Norms in International Peace Mediation" and Chaired a panel on Regional and International Bodies in Mediation.  This was the second time in the last couple months Prof Packer visited Pretoria. In April 2015, he contributed to a consultation of the UN's Academic Advisory Council on Mediation and met with South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps based in Pretoria.
