On November 6, HRREC Director John Packer chaired a panel entitled “Women, Refugees, Sexual Orientation and Violence in International Law: Raising Voices and Expanding Protection" during the 44th Annual Conference of the Canadian Council on International Law, held in Ottawa from November 5 to 7, 2015.
The speakers were Furio De Angelis (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee), Nathalie Ricard (Anthropology Department, Laval University), and Sarah Taylor (Human Rights Watch).
This panel was organized in memoriam of Professor Nicole Laviolette, who taught in the French Common Law section at the Faculty of Law (uOttawa) until her passing in May 2015. Her research, advocacy work and publications were mainly devoted to refugee law, international human rights, and family law. Throughout her prolific career, Professor Laviolette received numerous awards based on the excellence of her teaching, mentoring and research, as well as her public policy contributions.
