The Human Rights Research and Education Centre is pleased to welcome this new art exhibition. LUCK! is a collaborative art project organized by local artist Don Kwan, immigrant artist Alejandro Salgado Cendales and community members of Chinatown. The project aims to reconstruct the history and identity of the Chinese community in Canada through the narrative of personal stories. Because of their participatory nature, there is a wide range of mediums: photographs, quilts, collage, digital video, sculptures, and fortune cookies.

The artists

Donald Kwan is an interdisciplinary artist based in Ottawa. He is an active member of the Chinese community giving tours and organizing events that celebrate the history and contemporary culture in the community in which he was born and raised. His artwork highlights his experience as a third generation Canadian and first generation Chinese born Canadian.

Alejandro Saldago Cendales explores the boundaries of contemporary art through interdisciplinary practices, mixing techniques and methods from other disciplines like anthropology, sociology, and history. He defines his work as research-based and community-based practice. By meeting with different members of the contextual community and using dialogue as an instrument for communication and aesthetic research, his projects evolve in collaboration with the participants. Through a process of negotiation and discussion, the boundaries between the artist and the audience get blurred, transforming art practice into a collective and democratic action.

There will be an official launch of the exhibition in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned!
