In 2011, Yemen went through an Arab Spring revolution where protests broke out in public squares demanding an end to 33 years of Ali Abdullah Saleh dictatorial rule of Yemen. Quickly the Gulf Cooperation Countries (GCC) jumped to broker a deal that granted Saleh an unconditional legal immunity on the condition he transfer power to his vice president Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi. A fragile transition took place over the next several years. On September 21, 2014 the Houthi militia took over the capital Sana'a with help from former Yemeni President Saleh.

A civil war broke out in 2014, followed by a Saudi-led military intervention in March 2015, which has resulted in over 10,000 dead and 32,000 injured. The security and economic conditions continue to deteriorate, with three failed UN-led peace talks unable to bring a peace settlement between the main warring parties.

Sponsored by the University of Ottawa’s Human Rights Research and Education Centre, and Sana'a Center for Strategic Studies, “This is Yemen 2016” is a rare opportunity to hear from Yemeni experts, who will present an assessment of Canada’s relations and potential means for engagement regarding the situation in Yemen. The program will also feature Yemeni art performances and the opening of a photo exhibit of Yemeni photographer Thana Faroq.

Speakers:

  • Farea AL-MUSLIMI | Chairman, Sana'a Centre for Strategic Studies
  • Abdurahman HUSSAIN | Filmmaker and Producer
  • Methal AL-HAMMADI | Musician, Singer and Songwriter
  • Abdullah AL-MANSOOB | Director of Development, Sana'a Centre for Strategic Studies
