José David González, the coordinator of the La Guajira Human Rights Committee, has worked for more than 15 years defending the human rights of the indigenous communities and peoples of Mara and Guajira municipalities in the State of Zulia. González has been awarded this year’s prize in recognition of his work settling disputes in communities, educating and promoting human rights; publicizing violations when they occur; and lobbying for solutions to the health and education challenges in local communities.
In 2009, the Central University of Venezuela’s Center for Peace and Human Rights and the Embassy of Canada joined forces to create an award to recognize the work of individuals and nongovernmental organizations who promote, disseminate and/or defend human rights. The award recognizes the international human rights principles endorsed by Venezuela and Canada, which serve as pillars of foreign policy and of the relations between the two countries. This year, we specifically pay tribute to the professionalism of human rights defenders and organizations in Venezuela.
